Fun to sit and watch practice today... Been about 20 years since I was last able. With respect to the late great Randy Turner, the king of Odds and Sods writing.... here's some thoughts: -Al

  • Just to speak to Wolitarsky’s character and just what a good dude he is … few years back, some friends and I went to go see him play at Earl’s on Main and we ended up chatting with him and Streveler …

Really easy to always say that there's some mystical coach out there that would be a better fit.  We've been through generations as CFL fans watching teams including our own who keep believing that.

Balanced with the fa approach to loading up, how about we go out and find ourselves another type Lawler and I know they aren’t plentiful to find but that’s what professional scouts are paid to do and I’m not expecting perfection just a good ole college try.

Should be able to find a receiver defensive end and DB pretty easily.

Sure, but let’s be realistic. Lawler doesn’t have to talk to us and I’d be surprised if he does. We can “match” all we want, he doesn’t have to do anything

If the issue is that he wants out then we don't bother talking to him. I have a feeling he doesn't mind moving on to a situation where his team is likely to have a more functional passing game. Look at the numbers that Mitchell was able to put up last year and now add Lawler to that receiving core.  Scott Milanovich clearly knows a thing or two about the passing game in the CFL.  Here we are more of a running team and his offensive co-ordinator is a runningbacks coach.  Maybe I'd leave too if i was worried about my personal stats.

It comes down to the 275 k. If someone offered 276k Kenny would sign with that team. I’m not upset with him but if there’s ever an example of a player taking the money it’s Kenny. Dude went to Edmonton for 300k. Kenny probably doesn’t care about winning as much as he does his paycheques. It’s beyond obvious at this point. Some players will take less to win. Some will take more knowing full well they won’t.

This is just silly box score scouting. 275k doesn’t mean you should put up 1000 yards, 275k means you should be an impact player when you’re on the field and he is. You don’t win games in the stat sheet, you win them on the field and Lawler is a player that helps you win on the field.

True. Means you shouldn’t get duis, and sure as heck should have your passport sorted in a timely fashion. And shouldn’t disappear for weeks at a time on the field.

Lawler helps you win games, some times. Excellent talent. Feel like when he retires you’ll lack back at what he accomplished and say, that’s it?
Lawlers huge moments are as big as Milts in terms of impressiveness. But not in terms of those plays winning us games.

The issue with Lawler is that he only sometimes does it. West final, yeah he was untouchable... but then there's been games he isn't close to that guy. Would have loved to keep him, even at a big dollar value, but I don't know he's worth it anymore. Too inconsistent game to game.

Why would Lawler talking to us surprise you? He would be an idiot not to do so if we called. No he doesn't have to accept our offer, but he probably would if the dollars are the same. Kenny went for the money but if we had offered it to him he would be here. Everything he's ever said about the Bombers backs that up.

And also, if we can bump the number then the other teams are going to bump THEIR number. Regardless of what the overall pot is at, it's all about percentages of that pot. So, if we said we'd bump 10% above what Ham offered Woogie, then I'm sure Ham is willing to also bump 10% beyond that...

He's already a free agent.  He was released.

The whole negotiating window run around only applies to guys who are coming up to their contract expiry.

That Osh call is interesting only because it appears they have contradicted what he said they were doing already. In regards to moving on from players and guys being ready to go in their places. Explain Jake and Kyrie then Osh. Please.

but besides that it’s pretty uneventful. Osh went to the Chevy school of media speak.

perhaps most interesting is Osh being pals with Paul Friesen it appears. Calling him Frieser and everything. Man those sports nick names are so creative huh.

ps. I’m not yelling at anyone. I’m sharing my thoughts as a prob 30 year fan of the bombers. I wasn’t the first few of my life but yeah I flip flop at times cuz that’s what fans do. I can like moves now and hate them later, what’s it matter really. I’m not looking for a job with the team, I’m just a fan. This site was created for fans and different opinions and thoughts on everything except political (eventho all our lives depend on that stuff).

it’s cool. There’s no hate or anger on my internet. I’m a chilled smiling happy guy. Got a kid and she’s awesome. Congrats @Mike you will learn being a girl dad is much better than a boy dad. Girls less dramatic these days.

I’m always hesitant to watch mos media stuff for this reason. The best interview I’ve seen from us since the gc week is paddy when he re signed.

Im sure it’s real hard for mos to admit these guys have had it and move on. I bet he has an itch to bring back biggie still.

I can’t fault MOS for believing in people. Maybe not enough do these days plus he was a former player who had to be told when to hang them up so you can’t fault the guy for being who he is. He knows exactly what a bighill would be thinking because Osh thought the same likely. It’s crazy. 2 of the best linebackers in cfl history are O’Shea and bighill so really it’s that drive and never give up approach that made them who they are and were.

Bighill was a beast for us. Nothing but respect there for him. Dude destroyed his body and willingly played hurt for my entertainment

The difference is they can't talk to him again unless he declines both teams offers and goes to FA

Yep..technically Kenny Lawler is under contract with the Bombers right now.

But lawlers agent told Walters he won’t be back. I think going public with that means he’s not going to be back because Winnipeg is prob not willing to pay him 275 or close to it. I don’t see how adding money means they willing to overpay now. He’s a ticat for all intents and purposes.

Cap went up 400k, I would like to know when teams were made aware of this

Yesterday morning. All the teams were all caught off guard. The CFLPA & CFL bungled it the way they always do. Both knew the cap was going up but chose not to tell anyone until yesterday. Now things get interesting. Will the Bombers go after Lawler to get him back? Same with Dobson? Will they try to sign other free agents on February 13th?

If the Bombers offer him a contract & it's what he wants he'll talk to us. Everything has been thrown wide open by this astounding salary cap increase.

I still think 275 is an overpay...just my opinion

Oakman and McEwen/Couture could IMO be a solid fit here. They seem to have not been scooped in the first wave.. .perhaps they are asking too much..but one of those of those lineman and Oakman on reasonable contracts would again IMO be really nice adds for us.

BOLO back as depth would  be a great signing I feel.

Lets see, what happens....

Lawler's agent told the Bombers he won't be back based on our offer. You don't see how adding half a million to the SMS might change what our offer is? You don't think changing our offer might get Kenny to stay?

I would much rather chase McEwan or Couture than to try get Dobson re-signed. BOLO would be a nice add as well.

In any other year I totally agree that 275 is an over pay. This is our GC hosting year. I am not against over paying/exceeding the cap this year to get our cup on home soil. For that reason I want KW to bring in difference makers. He hasn't done so yet and Lawler would be a great start.
