Tackling has become an epidemic on D. The % of play stops in the form of tackles at the 2nd and 3rd level is sickening.

We go through some version of this with JY every year too. His secondary is a mess for the first month or so of every year. People quickly forget that the rush 3 drop the rest thing came from us being awful at everything on D. The first month ish of 24, the side with Kramdi and ford couldn't cover a bed with all the blankets in the world. Going back to Hall, our secondary's panic button is deep soft zone. Generally, in the split field zone base our secondary runs the Corner is supposed to play short and out routes seeking to get under coverage and the Half carries the Deep target to the deep zone defender or they are the deep man. In both games, even the vets are struggling mightily with execution on who is picking up what. That's all why we are constantly replacing corners, while we are married to the hbs. The Halfs either carry and pass off or get deep enough that they generally are able to be more consistent. Jy has definitely been too cute with play call and design this year. I really like the guy as a coach, but he is trying to do way too much and be way too complex. Every year he tries to reinvent the wheel instead of building on whats worked.

Yep. And I think our DL could use some edge to it. Keys to the game for me, Secondary first. Hamilton isn't going to run much, but we will need the secondary to step up and play a good WR core, tough. The passing game takes a step forward; we need to see more of everything good in the passing game. Then continue to win the team's battle. That's our biggest advantage in any phase of the game.

That would be a huge advantage for us imo

About the biggest concern with that roster is, will Vaval be the dime? If it's going to be a Canadian, that will spell trouble and quick. Bouliane is less of a sam than Shay. I'm sure if someone is needed at that spot, it won't be him. 7 DL is an improvement. 2 dis at DL? Some one pinch me I must be dreaming! Its a group full of guys who can get after it too, and Gatkuoth. Im really interested to see what Reese would do with better surroundings and more reps. Even if he is a bit wild, it might be beneficial to have a DL with some edge for once.

it did look like that but being listed as a calf is a much better prognosis imo.

I had thought he must've turned down a PR spot. But now he's sitting on the PR in Ott. Maybe he saw a better future there, and that being on the PR here wouldn't lead to the AR here, but that seems less likely. We traded up to get him, barely played him, gave him some reps in pre-season, then cut him. And we will never know more than that. It's frustrating. Especially since Gatukuoth is at best on par with where KMB is, though IMO, Nuer is well behind Bailey right now. We badly need a rotational non-counter on the DL who can bring some disruption or serious run-stopping. But that is a premium in the CFL, that every team has been working on for longer than us. QFT. A healthy starting Calgary DL is one of the best ever put together in the CFL. We've gone from the least disruptive DL to some where mid to middle high. Lawson, Wj, and NuJake are tremendous together. And we have some young guys who can get after it on the opposite side of WJ. But that spot is far from cemented, and the depth would have to improve in order to be questionable. We don't even have a backup DT right now, and might not for a month or more. We are 1 injury away from playing a DE inside full-time. You can do that for a few reps, but doing it full-time is a sure way to burn guys out and get them banged up.

We used a ton of different sub-packages and alignments in the first half of the game on D. JY talked about it in the presser, and how that's what he wants to do. The D did get substantially better, though with simplification in the 2nd half. I love well-designed sub packs, but in the CFL, you need to have strong base usage. You can't be too crazy/complex too often. We have the ability to send 4 guys and get consistent disruption now. That needs to be our base. And the tricky stuff, needs to be used in moderation more.

Kelly has been injured each year he's been here, and hasn't shown the same flashes we saw from him as a rookie. Pretty much the same thing we saw with Noah Hallett. He's not the worst Sts guy in the league, but he's not a stud at it either. He's an end roster canadian, who doesn't offer anything to the D. Its too bad, but it does happen more often then you'd like. Especially for guys with that frame on D. I think he's had 3 pretty good injuries. Knee, arm, Idr the other one.

They looove that 6th man role for him that is for sure. Id like to see reese come in.

Super athletic kid. Tons of upside, hopefully all the time on NFL PRs has polished him some. Only if something drastic has changed while he was on NFL PRs. More likely he is a contingency plan as a global if the punter got hurt. Even then he probably just chases kicks.

eli has missed a lot of tc, he isnt 100% yet, plus rust and need to get into game shape. by the time he is where he needs to be, it will likely be too late to get a starting spot imo. We have the two kids rights in the nfl, with a pretty good chance of atleast one being here mid season. We’ve already given up on rando, so writing is gonna be on the wall for the likes of eli.

100%. Mills is an elite rb and a guy who can hit big runs on you but also grind and consistently fall forward. Also an excellent point here by booch. We had some strange subs and useage as well. Hamiltons one dimensional offence will be an interesting test for our D. If our dl doesn’t need to worry about the run, we could see some serious punishment on blm

that doesn’t mean it’s scheme, it’s not like we had an empty run fit or some thing. The problem with the run stop was execution in the assigned gaps and tackling. Which will suffer when you don’t have contact reps at game speed.

Condell did every thing i hoped he would. It’s early and the pass game has a lot to work on, but the play call was a massive improvement. The wind was crazy, which isn’t un common there (or here) Picking the wind in the 4th is a gamble. One that has paid off big at times and missed several other times. Personally I hate giving up possessions. but that was a strong wind. nailed it. Rust is real. We’ve got a bunch of changes on D, and that makes it hard as well. but with modest contact at best in camp, you need to use the pre season to get what you used to get from camp.

Yeah gotta be done for the year. Maybe carry another DB and never play kelly on D again. The secondary really seemed lost without a guy like griffin as the dime. Yeah. Kyrie had 1 real solid run stop 1 on 1 with the rb in the a gap. But Jones was running around tackling the back after yards gained all day. Not ideal.

Might need to add a category for being angrily wrong like DD. He was such a tool tonight. VA too. The FA pick-ups sure look good. The passing game was pretty slow for a good while, but that really looks like a personnel issue. Agree he called a very good game and did a nice job of getting guys involved and keeping Brady going. This is possibly the best OC'd game we've had in 2 years. He will probably have more sacks this year than our unit had last year.
