Around the League: 2018 Season
5 pointsThings to agree on, or not, on Sunday: 👁🗨Mark Chapman, 1st round CFL draft pick, has not signed with the Ticats. Interesting decision to miss his first pro camp with Hamilton... 👁🗨Former NFL QB Josh Freeman is indeed that, having been both fired and retired. Another oopsie at recruiting for Montreal.. 👁🗨 Nice to see and hear Chandler Fenner’s “kid-walks-into-a-candy-store-for-the first-time” attitude and excitement.. I liked the signing then, I like it even more now. Adding to this D’s versatility.. Don Landry reports on that infamous CFL Media poll: “Every team got at least one vote except for the Ottawa REDBLACKS” CFL News - In the first pre-season game of 2018, neither Brandon Bridge nor newcomer Zach Collaros are currently in the plans at quarterback for Chris Jones and the Roughriders 👁🗨Why isn’t more being said about the questionable depth of the Ottawa RedBlacks QB stable? William Arndt, Danny Collins, Dominique Davis and Trevor Harris. And finally, CFL game day with Saskatchewan visiting the Eskimos. CFL football is back!!5 points

3 pointsCouple of notes from today's practice, was able to attend: Defense was all over the offense today. Nichols had two interceptions and should have had a third. Streveler looked pretty poor. He had an interception where the DB undercut the RB's out route. Next play he scrambled left, tried to hit a receiver but put it in the turf. Seemed slow on his progressions but obviously hard to tell. The defense sacked him on a blitz and he had another ball batted down. Bighill blew up Harris on one run play that scared the heck out of me. Kyrie Wilson was still "starting" over JSK, who dressed today. Wilson had a really nice pick, reading Nichols' eyes on the 8-on-8 drill. Dropped back into coverage and just snagged it. They put the subs in for the next play and JSK picked off Nichols immediately too. Those were Nichols' two interceptions, as mentioned above. Gaitor almost had a third later on in the red zone. I know almost nothing about punting but Menard-Briere had some nice punts today. Medlock still had more hang time.3 points -

2 pointsThe issue with that is that the CFL has to compete with the NFL and real-life for players. Think of Geoff Gray. Say the cap the Bombers could sign him for was $80k per year or something on his rookie contract. Maybe he'd come north for $150k and give up the NFL PR dream. Guy is also an engineer and maybe would choose to start on his career rather than being forced to sign a 2 year contract for $80k per year. So there's the downside. It's a little different with MLB, NHL and NFL when you're talking millions of dollars and they are the top leagues in the sport.2 points -

2 pointsPeople can laugh or mock Johnny Manziel. The fact he is at TC training camp for far less than he made as a Cleveland Brown & is competing for not only a starting job but to reclaim his playing career has earned my respect. He seems to be saying & doing all the right things. I hope he succeeds as I don't want to wish him bad. And this is from one of the biggest Johnny Football haters out there after his dumpster fire time with the Browns.2 points -

Scouting and Coaching
1 pointNew comer Chandler Fenner has some perspective and objectivity, look how he sees his defensive coordinator and other coaches: "With all these pieces and the coaches we have, I have very high expectations.” Maybe Ritchie Hall is finally in his element ... so maybe we can back off in giving him the goat horns the first time something goes wrong ... we are not going 18 and 0.1 point

It is happening to families who have presented themselves to officials at border points and are requesting asylum who are having their children taken from them. Add on to that the fact that an official from US Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families testified that they "were unable to determine what happened to 1,475 children who were placed in sponsors' homes between October to December 2017". https://www.buzzfeed.com/salvadorhernandez/heres-how-the-us-government-managed-to-lose-nearly-1500?utm_term=.ijQEvNYdM#.nfQP3Vyob1 point -

1 pointTSN needs competition. Maybe because the league is so small and so much of TSN/League's energy is devoted to getting cozy with players in return for access but sometimes broadcasts come accross as a sewing circle...clucking praise with oh so gentle criticism. Maybe with a competitor there could be a little more sandpaper and call out league BS and jackass players when needed.1 point

1 pointHe's hands down the worst media personality in the CFL. He can't talk football rationally to save his life and he prefers to spend more time dumping on other teams and their players than anything else. He's a childish, classless, pathetic piece of **** and the Riders - and the league a whole - would be better off without him in their employ. The fact he even has a job in radio at all is pretty baffling.1 point -

1 pointYeah it's tough to listen to that idoit....not sure why they even bring him in for his thoughts....he is so biased and pro everything Sask....How he isn't sold on Nichols over past 2.5 years, but figures they are set with Collaros after past 2-3 years is embarrassing...And when he brings up a guy like Steele as part of a reason why their defense will be so dominant....guiy has no clue He also raved that they are just dominant on defense because they shut down their offence totally in practice..hmm...maybe thats more a matter of their QB's being pretty pathetic?...maybe he should spin it that way1 point

1 pointRod Peterson was on AM1290 this morning. He was asked about the Bighill pickup and whether he still predicts that the bombers will finish 5th in the West. He said it didn't change anything he still thinks Winnipeg will finish 5th because he's not a believer in Matt Nichols. LOL... So this guy is more of a believer in a washout like Zach Collaros over a guy who has had consistent success for 2 and half season in a row in Winnipeg and only had weapons added to his arsenal!1 point
