i know he did not work hard. You are telling me he could not put 20 to 30 pounds on in 3 years!!! Guys are throwing 20 pound on in 3 to 4 months for the combine right now. I guarantee if he had stayed and worked out at elite with fisher he would have been a much better player

All you gotta do is look at what he's doing now that he's outta football. Nothing that requires any serious effort or work ethic.

He apparently did put on more weight coming into the 2013 season.

Probably by taking Viagra before getting onto the scale.

Then he should have spent more time working out with Troy Stoudemire. Hey oh!!

1. Drafting Pencer over Shamwawd Chambers or Kirby Fabian.

2. Drafting Jade over Coehorn, Iannuzzi or Holmes.

3. Wasting picks on Kris Robertson and Carl Fitzgerald.

Mack was a poor drafter, didn't do a good job bringing in QBs and didn't use free agency effectively. Good recruiter though.

be fair, he also took Muamba over MItchell and I am sure we can find some other instances. Drafting, especially in the CFL is a crap shoot and everyone loves Kyle Walters but how would we feel about him if he took MItchell over Muamba? Which is something he likely would have done.

I'll give you Muamba over Mitchell but that's one of the few. Mack did a poor job of drafting.

I could add Carl Volny over Matt Walter in 2011, Johhny Aprile over Billy Peach, Chris Smith over Ryan Bomben.

None of us should be so willing to let Walters off the hook when it comes to our drafting. He may not have had final say, but what was Pencer even doing on the radar at that draft position. Walters was our NI scout. A lot of the duds in our draft were names he put forward for consideration in the respective rounds. Unless, of course, you are of the belief that names like Penser and Etienne were Mack discoveries that had nothing to do with Walters. However, we do know that it was not Mack or Moll that were scouring the CIS for talent. They were in the States the vast majority of the time.

He may have put the names forth BUT he didn't say on to WHEN to pick them. Ettienne and Pencer would have been fine had they been 4-5 round picks, sent back to school, yada yada. But Mack picked them first overall making it impossible not to have them on the team right away otherwise you look like a fool.

"Here you go boss.  Here are some names for you to consider.  They're not in any sort of order, so select them whenever."  Do you really think it went down like that?

I don't think it is fair to judge Walters on draft picks where Mack had the final say, as there is no way to know what board arrangement Walters would have had, and where he was over ruled.

It has come out that in 2013, Walters wanted Edem while Mack went with Mulumba.   That is just one example that we know of where Walters was overruled.

Walters should and will be judged on the drafts that he is the ultimate decision maker, and his name is attached to, as Mack gets judged on those when he was GM.

You really think Walters had no say in ranking the players. SMH

Walters could have very easily been overruled by Mack.. He seemed the type to disregard his underlings opinions..

I really can't fault the picks of pencer or Etienne.. He was a gambler.. If they panned out, they woulda been home runs.. Go big or go home was clearly his mantra. Bad idea when our canucks depth was so weak for sure tho..

He believed in taking players with physical tools and then turning them over to the coaches to turn them into players. It's not the worst strategy... unless you can't hire a good coach.

Enough with the ridiculous 'worst coach' thing... physical tools pfft.

Pencer was an OT with bum shoulders, Etienne was a receiver coming off a broken back, Robertson was a 5'6 DB and Fitzgerald was the slowest guy in the draft

Stephan and Swiston were recovering from a major injuries and seem like they never really did

comment_109939

Give Etienne a friggin break he was a kicker who had played one year of CIS as a WR. The biggest mistake was not sending him back to play another year of CIS so he could actually get playtime. The notion was how can you send a first rounder back? Well it seems to work for the NHL.

friggen break? It's not about Etienne as a person...it is about his physical makeup and the fact that he wasn't ready for the CFL, especially getting drafted in the first round.

You saying that either Lapo or Burke were good coaches?

Pencer was a big strong OL who could move pretty well, Etienne was a tall player with decent speed and had a decent year with little time spent as a WR, Robertson was short but I believe his testing numbers were quite good, Fitzgerald might have been slow but he was a big strong player. Lot of raw abilities there that were expected to be developed. It didn't happen for a variety of reasons. I just find that people are really too hard on Joe Mack for a lot of things. It's almost like it's personal and they will intentionally make things sound worse than they really were.
