But then the club was hamstrung by Zach's big contact.

He got the maximum guarantee which is half of his final year salary.

Even the smartest GMs make mistakes, but the difference is that the dumb ones refuse to admit it or change. The smart GMs make a mental note, examine how the boo-boo came to be and don't do it again. This promotes longevity.
