I do find it bizarre that someone like Paul Walker who was 33 at the time was dating a 15 year old girl gets a pass because he was a blonde eyed hot guy, yet a bizarre personality like Reubens is forever tarnished as some weird perv.

This "separation" happened a long time ago, they are finally just making it official. There just wasn't the help back then that there is now. She left her husband and three boys behind when she left which must have been hard. And hard on her children too.
