However, thanks for pulling up the picture, I always appreciate those who respect the history of the club and tout it beyond the last 21 seasons, and you always provide a needed shout-out to the days of yore prior to Milt/Khari that need to be celebrated and that the “older” generation like you and I got to witness first-hand. Your 1970’s input is especially refreshing for so many who do not know enough about a somewhat unheralded era in the club’s existence. Keep those number suggestions coming! Cal was miserly, but remember that the Montreal franchise (the Concorde) folded, Ottawa was hemorrhaging money, the Roughriders were on the verge of bankruptcy and holding telethons, and the CFL was close to closing up shop at the end of 1987 and needed its own TV network because no broadcaster was willing to pick up the games. And the league pilfered the Bomber coffers to keep the other teams alive. Murphy was cheap as much out of necessity as by choice given the debt load the team carried. Which is why he lobbied hard for the Grey Cup to come to Winnipeg and offered to buy the game from the league for a guaranteed sum and keep the profits for itself, which ended up wiping out the $1 million plus debt the club had accumulated. (The league quickly got wise and forced all teams to “buy” the game but raised their purchase fee so that they still made more money than the host most every time). Ironically, for all his penny-pinching, in his last year in 1996 it was revealed shortly after his firing that the Bombers had exceeded the salary cap and were fined.

BTW, kind of creepy in hindsight how Michael “saves” little kids locked in closets as part of the game play. Happy to see the club doing better and the offence getting going, but not too excited. By the way, his disability is an amputated leg. He claimed he lost it when he served in Afghanistan. When a quick check revealed he’d never served, he quickly retracted his lie. As it turns out, he was working as a labourer and fell off a roof, breaking his leg. Rumours that he was drunk at the time have not been verified, but he did not properly care for the break, and after it became infected his leg was amputated. He now says he works as a health and safety officer but there is nothing g to show he ever completed the required training, and he himself says he does not work. Of course, he has been collecting disability cheques ever since from the very same government he so loudly decries as oppressive.

He was put in the Blue Bomber Hall of Fame in 1992. And I have a memory of him and Hufnagel being honoured together at Canadinns one game with framed jerseys. I remember it because Clements said “thanks so much for the gift of a framed jersey, I guess now I can give back the one I stole from the locker room and hid in my bag when I left here”.

She was already before these Olympics, and is the GOAT male or female for international hockey as a Canadian. Maybe only Tretiak from the Russian dynasty in the 1970’s and 80’s could rival her as greatest international player ever. She is already on the Mount Rushmore of greatest Canadian hockey goals ever with Henderson in ‘72, Lemieux in ‘87, and Crosby in ‘10 with her OT winner in 2014. Has the Olympic gold medal winning goal now in 3 Games. No “female” or “Canadian” qualifiers for me, she is the best ever.
