What you may not know about this is that leading up to it, the first Black man elected recently to the city council had a racoon killed on his doorstep overnight and the reference was not subtle.- The RIP 2023 Thread
Glenda Jackson: Fierce and Singular to the Very End Glenda Jackson, the iconic actor and politician, has died at 87. With Tim Teeman she spoke candidly about mortality, awards, politics, acting, sexism—and meeting Fred Astaire. The idea of dying while at work, on stage, seemed “pretentious,” the actor Glenda Jackson once told this reporter, laughing. It reminded her of the story of Laurence Olivier saying to fellow actor Sybil Thorndike that he thought he was going to die during a performance. “One way to see it is that it’s a wonderful way to go,” said Jackson. “The other is: how unprofessional.” She laughed. “I prefer to go with the latter, I bloody do.” As it was, Jackson died Thursday at home in Blackheath, southeast London, aged 87, after a brief illness with her family at her side. Her agent Lionel Larner said she had recently completed filming The Great Escaper, alongside Michael Caine.- Blue Bombers - 2023 Regular Season - Discussion Thread

A couple of years ago I happened to bump into the manager of the Polo Park Store when there. He said that the plans were to first build a store just outside the perimeter near Assiniboia Downs and when the location drew enough business away from the Polo Park location, they would build on McPhillips north of the auto dealers there and close the Polo Park store,- Bombers vs Chuck Wagons early talk

Fox News labels Donald Trump the 'President of the United States' and Joe Biden a 'wannabe dictator' Americans tuning in to Fox News Tuesday night, hours after Donald Trump was arraigned on 37 federal criminal felony charges, had a big surprise: Donald Trump is the “President of the United States,” and Joe Biden, the man actually in the White House, is a “wannabe dictator.” That’s what Rupert Murdoch’s right-wing “news” network decided to tell its shrinking band of viewers, rather than the truth. Also not telling the truth was Trump himself, aided by Fox News which, unlike CNN and MSNBC (but exactly like Newsmax and C-SPAN) decided to run his post-arraignment speech live, with no anchor doing any fact checks or providing any context. “These things are not true, but Fox News is doing their damnedest to help,” noted MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle on-air, one of many who noticed and were disgusted enough to speak out. Axios national political correspondent Alex Thompson posted the video of Fox News host Brian Kilmeade announcing, “this is the president of the United States, about to address a crowd of supporters.” The Recount posted the clip of Fox News’ Chyron that reads: “Wannabe Dictator Speaks at the White House After Having His Political Rival Arrested” (in all-caps.) And no, Donald Trump is not the President of the United States, Joe Biden is. And Joe Biden is not a “wannabe dictator,” nor did he have “his political rival arrested.” https://twitter.com/i/status/1668788972967849985- Bombers vs Chuck Wagons early talk

I recommend a box with 4 gig of ram, 2.5-5.0 wifi capability and 4K video output. The brand name does not seem to be critical. the IPTV server I recommend is Choice1 which also sells boxes for about $50.00. These boxes have WiFi capability but work best on an ethernet. Choice1 has excellent support service and will offer a 24 hr free trial and is pretty easy to set up. IPTV is still evolving and does have the odd glitch but a helluva lot cheaper and better than Bell or Shaw. Movies show up within 48 hours of theater release.- US Politics
It would be a single, small step in a long journey with no guarantee of success. Both industry leaders and fundamentalist leaders in the US have said out loud that democracy does not serve their interests well.- The TV Thread
The simplest way is to buy an Android box and subscribe to a good IPTV service- about $12.00 per month. I have Primus internet service and for $55.00 per month I get 75-95 MBPS almost completely stable. I switched because we had no end of problems with Bell/MTS for many months and finally gave up on them.- Manitoba Politics
Greed and lust for power is the problem, not necessarily the political label. That said, capitalism has an inbuilt bias towards accumulation of power through unbridled competition. It is very much an ego-driven process and thus a short step to manipulating systems to promote self-serving goals and from thence to illegal means to achieve same. While not perfect, true socialism can function only in a vibrant democracy and by extension, will accept losing public favour and thus elections.- US Politics
TRUMP’S BAD DAY GETS EVEN WORSE AS JUDGE ALLOWS E. JEAN CARROLL TO ADD CNN TOWN HALL DEFAMATION TO LAWSUIT A federal judge has ruled in favor of E. Jean Carroll and allowed her to amend her defamation complaint to include comments made by Trump at his CNN town hall. Carroll is seeking additional defamation damages for comments made by Trump about her at his CNN town hall. Instead of backing off after he lost the first defamation lawsuit against Carrol, Trump doubled down by going on national television and attacking her. The CNN town hall was a bust for everyone who was involved. The special didn’t deliver big ratings for the network. It got former CNN boss Chris Licht fired, and Trump is now facing additional damages in the E. Jean Carroll lawsuit. Trump spent Tuesday being arrested and arraigned in Miami on 37 federal counts related to violations of the Espionage Act and obstruction of justice, and somehow his day managed to get even worse. https://www.politicususa.com/2023/06/13/trumps-bad-day-gets-even-worse-as-judge-allows-e-jean-carroll-to-add-cnn-town-hall-defamation-to-lawsuit.html- US Politics
TRUMP MAY HAVE GOTTEN HIMSELF CONVICTED WITH BEDMINSTER SPEECH Donald Trump chose to give a political speech after being arraigned on federal charges and some of the statements that he made will likely be used against him at trial. There were two relevant moments that were bad for Trump’s legal defense: Trump called the government documents his presidential papers: Trump said: "Charging a former president of the United States under the Espionage Act of 1917 It wasn’t meant for this. An act for a crime so heinous that only the death penalty would do and threatening me with 400 years in prison for possessing my own presidential papers, which just about every other president has done. Is one of the most outrageous and vicious legal theories ever put forward in an American court of law. The Espionage Act. Has been used to go after traitors and spies. It has nothing to do with a former president, legally keeping his own documents as president, a law that applies to this case is not the Espionage Act, but very simply the Presidential Records Act. None of what Trump said is true or correct. He doesn’t seem to know what the Presidential Records Act is, or that it applies to sitting presidents, and the legal requirement to preserve all documents while in office. Trump also argued that the government documents are his personal presidential papers, which they are not. Classified documents are not presidential papers." Judge Aileen Cannon will not preside over Trump arraignment: report Controversial U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon will not preside over the arraignment of former President Donald Trump for the alleged mishandling of national defense documents, it was reported Monday. Although Trump's case was randomly assigned to Cannon, the arraignment will be handled by Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman. - Calgary vs Ottawa Week 2
