UFA and RFA
The problem with Yakupov is that after 3 years in the NHL, the guy hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st overall pick. You can sit here and speculate that the problems lay on the shoulders of a coach, and that may be true, only time will tell. But as of today, Yakupov hasn't yet proven he deserved to be taken 1st overall. So far, you would have to say he is a bust. It will be interesting to see if that changes. Rumours of locker room issues and bolting to the KHL persist (I'm sure KHL rumours have subsided with the condition that league is in right now). If Edmonton really believes his potential is better then he has shown so far, then they would be foolish to trade him when his value is at his lowest. His salary is still relatively cheap, so I don't see an upside to them trading him right now, unless someone dangles something special, and I don't know who would do that. I certainly hope it isn't Chevy.

Around the CFL Offseason Discussion
I get what you are saying but it is more complicated then that. I don't know what the CFL policies are, but most professional sports organizations have athletes sign code of conduct agreements, same with CEOs and anyone who is in the public eye and is seen as representing a company or brand. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say and do whatever you want without consequence. It means the government can't arrest you for it. Every action has a reaction. The CFL and BC Lions need to protect their brand. If they are seen supporting a person with conflicting views of a large percentage of their fans, it could mean loss revenue for them. That is why code of conduct policies are in place. To protect a brand and company. So you definitely have your right to your own beliefs and free speech, but if you signed an agreement that if those beliefs conflict with your employers and if you do something to tarnish their brand, they have the right to punish and or fire you.

Draft Day Thread - - It's here, its now
Forum does have an ignore function: Go to your profile (where it says your username in the upper right) Click on My Settings Then 'Ignore Preferences' on the left hand side You can manage who you ignore there (add / remove from your ignore list). You can also choose to ignore signatures, posts, messages, etc. The only caveat is you cannot ignore people in the admin and moderator groups. Does this work for spouses? Only if you have them sign up to the site, then do all of your communication through PMs. Or I could open a special new section where you can post back and forth to ignore each other but everyone else gets to read your dirty laundry.

Moose News
A minor league team will always have a number of vets on it. Part of their job is to mentor the younger players as well as providing stability for the on ice product. Show them how to be a professional. There are rules in the AHL that limit the number of vets a team can have, but all teams will have vets.

How happy are you with Walters' Draft work?
Sorry, can't see a CFL player developing an NHL attitude with the amount of money they are paid and the competition they face keeping a job. Apples to oranges. I don't think money and guaranteed contracts has anything to do with attitude. It isn't an "NHL" attitude. It is human nature. Some people just are who they are and for whatever reason are destructive to themselves and others. I don't know if this is the case with Durant, but there is a reason he dropped so low. And if every team saw or had the same information, there is something there. If someone is lazy or has a poor work ethic, they are lazy and have a poor work ethic. I've seen this in people that I've work with who make less money then an NHL player and make less money then a CFL player.

QB Jordan Yantz (undrafted camp invitee)
I believe it is so teams don't abuse the 3rd string QB. 3rd string QB rarely sees the field so you could gamble to bury/dress a Canadian QB there so you can dress another DI. I've also seen it said that it is a collective bargaining issue and that the CFLPA doesn't want it to happen (don't know the rationale behind that) It is time they look at it and figure out a way to make it work. The Canadian football league should encourage Canadian QBs (like they do the other positions), not put them at a disadvantage.

CFL Draft needs
It is how you build a strong contending team. Competition is a good thing and forces all your players (incumbents and rookies) to only get better. And if a younger guy shows that he is ready to take a veteran's spot, that is a good thing. Look at the Calgary model. they were able to get the 1st overall pick in last years draft because they were able to trade Jon Gott to Ottawa. You can only do things like that when you have depth and competition. It also means you don't have to force a player into playing until they are ready. Let them learn and prove themselves before stepping in to be a full time starter.

Canadians in the NFL Draft
Chat board limit has been upped to 250 (from 50) so we shouldn't hit the limits we saw during free agency day. Though the draft is at night. I wonder if the chat room is busier during the day when people are at work!

Training camp successes
Chiarot has already proved he can play in the NHL. Morrissey hasn't. Chiarot also has the size where Morrissey doesn't. I get that Morrissey has much more offensive upside, but I can't see him doing anything in TC that would make them send Chiarot back down. TC and exhibition are completely different beasts then regular season play.

I'll give most players a pass on their commitment to what the Oilers have been for the last few years. I know they are professionals and get paid a lot of money, but if you've ever worked in a toxic environment where management is clueless, it is hard to go in every day and give 110% when you know it is futile because those above you aren't pulling their weight and are making foolish decisions. With the management Edmonton now has in place, time will tell on what their crop of stars can become. Be interesting to see if and how long it takes to change the culture in that room. Have to wonder who and what kind of trades are going to be made and who will be shipped out. I'd be surprised if Hall is one of them.

I've never heard anyone question his heart or character. To his character, it is one of the reasons he can't stay healthy. At times, he plays too hard to his own detriment.

Alberta, Taxes, and Socialism
I think that the anti-Harper crew have to play any card they have in the deck. In 2011 all I heard was that Harper was a Nazi who was going to make abortion and gay marriage illegal and stack the Supreme Court with right wing judges. Well none of that happened. They can't really say their guy is going to do a better job of managing the economy (well they can try, but no one is going to believe it) so all they have left is the fear card. According to the polls not too many are buying this. This new security bill is a bit of a head-scratcher. I don't now why Harper is doing this right now, but I guess I have nothing to hide so I don't really care. I for sure fall to the right line of centre politically but the having nothing to hide rational is IMO a poor and dangerous one. This is a quote from Benjamin Franklin, but I think an appropriate one. Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

IceCaps' new name, logo to be unveiled Monday
When the Moose were here last time there wasn't NHL to compete with entertainment dollar. They know there will be a core base that won't buy season tickets to both. Making it cheaper makes sense. Also, I'm sure they are happy if the Moose break even and aren't losing money. Last time they needed to turn a profit.

Sign Willy!
They were leaving with expectations (and in ever case they did) of being a starter.. So, still a starter moving in FA.. Yes butt the teams they were moving from had a starter ahead of them on the depth chart. Someone said starting QBs never get to FA. My point was most teams don't let the QBs they want to keep get to FA. They are usually signed before their final year. I get people wanting Willy to prove himself. I just don't like the risk of him having a breakout year and being so close to FA that he decides to explore it. QB is the most important position and I'd rather see that risk mitigated.

Sign Willy!
Most of those weren't starters when they left their team. They were the backup. As for Pierce and Burris, the team decided to move. I said where the team wanted to keep them

Sign Willy!
... are we really going to act like the potential downside of him signing elsewhere doesn't exist? When's the last time a starting QB in the CFL left via free agency? I wouldn't be too worried. When is the last time a team, who wanted to keep their starting QB play out the final year of their contract? There is a reason it doesn't happen

Stuart Olson alleges Triple B, province knew about design issues at IGF
Not so much about distance as it is about getting on and off the campus which only has two direct entry/exit points. Will be interesting to see how they have it organized for the Grey Cup, with thousands of people from out of town. I also think they have a lot of work to do in terms of safety/crowd control after the games on University Crescent and Chancellor Matheson. Just a matter of time until someone is killed or seriously injured there. yeah but there's not that much parking on the campus itself right? I think it's quaint that Winnipeggers complain about traffic though. Winnipeg is a breeze for traffic compared to Calgary and Calgary isn't even all that bad compared to some other places. There are 5,000 parking spots available on campus, estimating at least 2 people per car, then that is 10,000 people or a 1/3 of the people driving. But then the buses also use those same roads to get in and. In fact they get priority over the cars. So take into account enough buses to get another 10k - 15k people in and out. So 5,000 vehicles + countless buses all converging into 2 roads in the same hour period before and after the game. It has definitely gotten better since the first couple of games, but it can still be a pain getting out when it is more concentrated. It is quaint how you take every opportunity to mock someone from Winnipeg for complaining about traffic wait time. City size has nothing to do with having 30,000 people congregating to IGF field at the same time with only 2 entry points in and out. We get it. You got out. You got to Alberta. Land of greatness. Congrats.
