Get a grip Rip. Fill your boots? Now that the Riders are in that very precarious position in the QB situation, sarcastically taking shots at a successful QB who is winning games in our system, seems petty. But I understand, your season is already in jeopardy and deflecting is a defence mechanism. Wading in the CFL waters without a starting QB. You only wish you had boots.

TORONTO — The Canadian Football League announced Monday that it has issued a two-game suspension to Hamilton Tiger-Cats linebacker Simoni Lawrence. The suspensions comes after the veteran linebacker made direct contact to the head of Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Zach Collaros in the Ticats’ season opener on Thursday at Tim Hortons Field. As a result, Lawrence will miss matchups against division rivals Toronto Argonauts in Week 2 and Montreal Alouettes in Week 3. In a league-issued statement, Commissioner Randy Ambrosie said the following: On play #4 of CFL game #10, our regular season opener in Hamilton on Thursday, June 13, Hamilton Tiger-Cat Simoni Lawrence made direct contact to the head of Saskatchewan Roughrider quarterback Zach Collaros after Collaros had “given himself up” by starting his feet first slide. This dangerous and reckless hit has no place in our game. After a careful review of the play, which was called for unnecessary roughness on the field and assessed a 25-yard penalty, and a hearing with Lawrence, we are imposing a two-game suspension. We want to put this supplemental discipline in its proper context by making the following important points. 1. Player safety is the top priority for CFL. This point was stressed yet again as recently as June 12, the day before the game in question, in a league memo to all clubs which clearly stated: “Any player who performs an illegal act that creates a substantial and unnecessary risk of injury to an opposing player in a reckless and dangerous manner and outside of the acceptable standards of play will be subject to a suspension.” 2. In our recent discussions with the Canadian Football Players Association (CFLPA) that led to a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), and in its public statements, the players association has said many times that player health and safety is also the players’ top priority. 3. Several individual players have continued to echo that sentiment on social media, during and since those CBA talks, including this past weekend. 4.We all need to walk all of this talk in a meaningful way now, at the outset of our season, by sending and supporting a clear and unequivocal message on player safety. 5. The precise circumstance that occurred on this play was identified this Spring by our Rules Committee, which includes the leadership of the CFLPA, as one that requires urgent and strong action. It passed a rule change that increased the focus on such a play and the scope of what is considered a penalty. Our supplemental discipline needs to mirror this emphasis. 6. We want to stress that this discipline is the result of this player’s actions on this play and this play alone. In fact, he has never been previously fined or suspended for dangerous play since joining the league in 2012. In addition, he has expressed contrition for his actions and concern for his opponent and former teammate’s health and well-being. However, dangerous and reckless play must be disciplined, not simply for the sake of punishment alone, but to deter such play in the future . All of us, league and players, need to take and support strong action to promote and protect player health and safety, and we need to work together. – Randy Ambrosie, CFL, Commissioner

Scapegoat update after game 1: Nichols - Low yardage, high QB rating, and showed nice touch on a couple of long passes. But the best part of his game was his escapability in the red zone. Looks like the knee problems from last year are not a factor, and his scrambling led to the Adams and Wolitarsky (#2) TDs. Will always be on the list due to the nature of the position, but slides down the depth chart with a solid game (management). Hecht - Another serving of crow, anyone? Even if you take away the 2 INTs, his chicken dance to Duron Carter should remove him from any scapegoat consideration for a while. Demski - Fairly uninvolved game for one of our key Canadian offensive weapons. And ball security reared its ugly head again with a fumble that luckily rolled out of bounds. But wins gloss over many flaws, so he is off the hook for now. Couture - Some good protection, but even better run blocking from the interior of the line. Whole o-line is in the good books for now. Wilson - 3 tackles, no glaring mistakes, only the injury seems notable from this game for him, although I wasn't tracking him specifically to make a full analysis. Any new candidates? Fenner got beaten badly on a TD pass, but redeemed himself immediately with the blocked convert return.. Cover teams may need some work, not sure who missed their assignment on the kick return TD. Whitehead did very little offensively to show off his speed and was not out on the return team.

How any quarterback can absorb an illegal hit should not have anything to do with how the league should deal with the punishment. I don't know why a guy who might suffer a concussion should be treated any differently than a guy who has never had one. The result of the hit should not be considered. Reviewing the play quite a few times I can not see how Lawrence can convince anyone he was going to tackle him. With the position of his arms that could not have happened. It is hard to accept a player would go to injure a member player who like himself is trying to earn a living. It's even harder to accept that the PA is not supporting the one hurt .

I would say unequivocally that Matt Nichols played a huge role in winning that game. Before you say Andrew Harris, I’ll say “I know, I know”, BUT Matt showed us the ability to scramble, turning last year’s probable 6 points (2 fgs) into 14 points. And after a bit of a slow start, he was throwing nice passes, caught, and yac yardage gained. It was a well called game by LaPo, but still, you have to execute. And our QB did. After all a QB rating of 108.65 is not bad at all..

Are you trying to insinuate that BC wasn't prepared for Harris to run? They of all teams understand what a weapon he is, he was theirs for years. The key is that no matter how much a team schemes to stop Harris he finds a way to succeed. The surprise comes in when he busts past your best run blockers and stacked 7 or 8 man box...

Well. Ambrosie is working for the Bombers and called a hit on Collaros. So there wont be any additional punishment for SL. The entire league is against the ArseRiders. Only Rider QBs are targeted and only Rider QBs get knocked out of games. Its business as usual for Canadas Team.

I think any logical fan knew Collaros wasn't going to play all year. He was damaged goods. I don't think that excuses the hit, if anything it probably encouraged it to a certain extent. Odell Willis took him out last year and basically ended our season. For me it really bothered me to see it end that way for Zack. Basically the last 2 games of his career he took nasty head shots and the league did nothing about it. I agree a 2 game suspension is warranted and should not be pled down to a fine by the CFLPA. Maybe other qb's wouldn't have been hurt on that hit, but you have to honestly ask yourself if want to roll the dice if Nichols is going to get up after that hit. Or Better yet, What if Harris doesn't get up after that hit, your season would be over without him. Its easy for people to dismiss things when their team isn't involved, but the league is a community. As a league are we ok with head shots on our qb's when they are sliding feet first? Interesting incident in the Eskimo game, a Esk's player was flagged for basically same thing. When they showed the replay in slow motion you could see the player making a huge effort to NOT make head contact, which he didn't do. The flag was thrown in error as it turned out. It was a reminder to show how Lawrence mad zero effort to avoid contact with the head when he was in same situation.
