Carpet sales and installation

I've been wanting to rip up the wall-to-wall carpet in my house for a long time and finally have a little money set aside so I may actually have it done. Any advice on where to go to buy the carpet? Do they do their own installation or contract out? Who are the good installers and who are the bad. Help!
