Workers Abandoned Repairs to Doomed Surfside Condo Last Fall, Says Report

Last October, construction workers were brought into Champlain Towers South to assess and repair worsening concrete damage in the building. But, according to documents obtained by USA Today, they discovered that the concrete deterioration had gotten so bad that workers couldn’t carry out repairs out of fear they would destabilize more areas of the condo complex. A summary of the work carried out on Oct. 13 reportedly said restoration and repair work “could not be performed” because it “could affect the stability of the remaining adjacent concrete constructions.” It’s still not known what caused last week’s collapse, which killed 18 people and has left 145 people still missing as of Friday morning. Meanwhile, officials are weighing up a plan to demolish the ruins of the complex after the search operation was paused Thursday over fears of a secondary building collapse.

Boy Scouts Reaches $850 Million Settlement With Sexual Abuse Victims

The Boy Scouts of America reached a mammoth settlement agreement with representatives of tens of thousands of victims of sexual abuse, according to a Thursday filing in Delaware bankruptcy court first reported by Reuters.     So, my understanding is that rhino horns are composed of "hair". It grows and fuses and creates the hard horn we know. 

    Now, if they can replicate this, why can't they 3D print me some hair for my head that my kids have caused me to lose?

    Asian culture is fixated on rhino horns as an aphrodisiac. For a while, game wardens in Africa and Asia were spraying a penetrating dye onto the horns of the live animals but it seems the poachers found a way to get around that.

    GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) — A Wyoming rancher who was pinned by an all-terrain vehicle survived on beer and bottled water for two days.

    Frank Reynolds, 53, was trying to round up a cow and calf on a neighbor’s pasture outside Gillette when the vehicle tipped over on him Sunday, Reynolds told the Gillette News Record.

    “It was scary as hell is what it was,” Reynolds said Wednesday from a hospital room."

     

    @Trackerread about the war in Iraq, us troops in air conditioned quarters, former Soviet pilots flying for a contractor doing resupplying transport slept in hammocks slung from plane wings.

    fingers crossed afganistan is the last American overseas invasion.too much **** on their plate to do another one.

    In American reporting, mercenaries are now referred to as  "contractors".  These are essentially hired killers who have been soldiers for one country or another but have been let go, usually for sociopathic behaviours and actions and although they are usually side by side with American/British/ French troops, the mercenaries are paid 3-4x more than regular soldiers and are immune from prosecution.

    When evangelical snowflakes censor the Bible: The English Standard Version goes PC.  How a Bible edition aimed at right-wing evangelicals has quietly scrubbed references to slavery and "the Jews"

    Long before Donald Trump made attacks against "political correctness" a key theme of his 2016 election campaign, evangelical leaders like Wayne Grudem, author of "Systematic Theology", have railed against it, particularly when they see it invading their turf — with gender-neutral language in Bible translations, for instance. But a new study by Samuel Perry, co-author of "Taking America Back for God" (I've previously interviewed his co-author, sociologist Andrew Whitehead), finds Grudem himself involved in much the same thing. 

    "Whitewashing Evangelical Scripture: The Case of Slavery and Antisemitism in the English Standard Version," looks at how successive translations have changed in the English Standard Version of the Bible, for which Grudem serves on the oversight committee. 

    In revisions from 2001 through 2016, Perry shows, the word "slave" first gains a footnote, then moves to the footnote and then disappears entirely — in some contexts, like Colossians 3:22, though not others — to be replaced by the word "bondservant," which could be described as a politically correct euphemism. A similar strategy is used to handle anti-Semitic language as well, Perry shows. 

    It's one thing for politicians to hypocritically switch positions mid-air, or hold contradictory positions simultaneously, but it's quite another thing for theologians — or at least it's supposed to be. Evangelical Christians in particular are supposed to revere the literal truth of the Bible, not fiddle around with it to make it sound better to contemporary audiences.
