Posted August 28, 20159 yr comment_146140 Al Arbour passed away at the age of 82. How does he rate all time great coach. I think only Scotty Bowman rates higher in the modern era with Glenn Sather rounding out top three.
August 28, 20159 yr comment_146178 Arbour was a great coach. He took an expansion team with no talent other than Denis Potvin that first year (1972-73) to 4 consecutive Stanley Cup championships (1980-83). I don't think any other NHL coach ever did that. In my opinion, he was as good a coach as Scotty Bowman & right up there with the best.
August 29, 20159 yr comment_146326 One of the best.... easily top 10 and arguably top 5. He did have a LOT of talent though when they went on that 4 year run. I think Smith and Nystrom were there in their first season.
August 29, 20159 yr comment_146366 One of the the best, IMO top three. He also came back after retirement in the late 80's and led a pretty good Islanders team for a few seasons in the early 90's. His team's victory over a stacked Penguins team in the 93 playoffs ranks as one of the biggest upsets in playoff history.
