Posted October 25, 201410 yr comment_90782 TSN had a stat. that in 61 out of 66 games this year the team with the most yards rushing has won the game. Seems contrary to Etch's theory that the pass is the primary determinant of wins in the CFL.
October 25, 201410 yr comment_90783 But, but...we have been told repeatedly that the run game is just not important any more. What's a girl to think?
October 25, 201410 yr comment_90786 Correlation does not imply causation. Teams that are winning and likely to win run the ball heavily.

Seems contrary to Etch's theory that the pass is the primary determinant of wins in the CFL. That statement is not proof. It simply isn't supported by that statistic you provided. That's taken out of context. Too many factors haven't been included, including passing yards and turnovers.

We have a seven game losing streak happening. Maybe MOS should worry.

He's been asked specifically about yardage in certain games..referring to run yards. That is when he has said he was wasn't worried…in those situations. Not a blanket statement as you're implying.
October 25, 201410 yr comment_90824 That's like the "The Bombers are 36-0 whenever Charles Roberts runs for 100 yards" stat. Teams go into clock kill mode late in games. Not that it isn't important, this is just misleading is all.
October 25, 201410 yr Author comment_90835 That's like the "The Bombers are 36-0 whenever Charles Roberts runs for 100 yards" stat. Teams go into clock kill mode late in games. Not that it isn't important, this is just misleading is all. Except that this stat. refers to every game played this year so it can't be dismissed out of hand when it accounts for 92% of all wins. I'm sure if the team with the most passing yards had won with that frequency TSN would have brought that stat. up as well. I wonder how much of the remaining 8% accounts for Bomber victories, I think they out rushed the Argos the RB's and BC early in the season but can't recall them doing it since. (Sorry, too lazy to look through the game stats.)
October 25, 201410 yr comment_90841 Some interesting points are made for sure. Definitely when a team is 'leading', the best way to control the game is to run the ball, and if you are behind, you need to score as quickly as possible, which is through the air. So I do think the stats are skewed to a certain degree. But, all that being said, it's 92% of wins as TLB says. That statistic is too large a number to be dismissed as 'happenstance'. 60%, even 65%, I fully buy into the "running the ball in the lead" argument. 92%... not so much.
October 25, 201410 yr comment_90865 100% of the games this season have been won by the team that scored the most points! That's a nice little stat to throw on a graphic but it really just amounts to saying the same thing. The team that plays better and accumulates more stats wins the game.
October 25, 201410 yr comment_90870 Well, statsjunkie posted the numbers at the other site: The Bombers have been out-rushed by their opponents in 13 of the 16 games so far, that's 81.25% and only out-passed by those same opponents 7 times, that's 43.75%. There's a reason Casino's make money and it's based on the same probabilities.

The original stats posted show two things: 1 - The teams with better rushing yards do so with a better offensive line. 2 - If you have a better offensive line the passing game will also be better Therefore: you win more games.
