I keep reading that the players arent as good as some people think.

I dont know, but they are definitely good enough to be a playoff team.

probably not one thing, but a combination of two or three things. Some player move mistakes, some coaching shortfalls, and some players being selfish, slack, and not very good.

I wish somebody could explain in non inside hockey language, why the defence is so crappy.

listless, no hitting, leaving goalie alone, lots of stick flailing, cant reliably pass out of their own end, often losing puck battles, clueless about where to be. Two guys follow one forward leave other forward alone lol. 

thats what I see. Basically disorganised, and gutless.

I do t believe that is just coaching.

I've probably watched 5 complete Jays' games already.  That usually doesn't happen til' they're in a playoff race.

And oh yeah - try being a Flyers and Jets fan these days.  Can't wait til the draft lottery.
