Threw into traffic but it was right on Washington. Can't go up for a ball with one hand, either with two or don't touch it at all. Cardinal sin of receiving. If he goes up with two hands he either catches it or the ball is on the turf.

Somebody better tell Odell and Duron ..... lotsa one handed catches lately...
September 5, 20186 yr comment_353270 If I put on the opposing DC's hat.....frankly, our receiving crew wouldn't scare me.....or anyone else for that matter. Nichols struggling only emphases the basic problem.
September 5, 20186 yr comment_353272 Our QB throws the ball high and outside into double coverage. Our receiver makes a nice move to even get a hand on it and folks blame the receiver? Then they go on to blame PLAP. SMH.

Look at where they are on the field, not between the hashmarks surrounded by 4 opponents, on the sideline Also not many guys like that. Kind of like saying why don't we call QB Draw all game for Nichols, Cam Newton does it.

Piss poor one handed effort when he was in position to get two hands on it. Sure didn't want it.

That's basic receiving. That pick is on the receiver. Deflections equate to turnovers. Pretty basic stuff.
September 5, 20186 yr comment_353281 Obligatory reference to Dave Ritchie's one-rookie-one-loss rule since it was Washington that made the gaffe.
September 5, 20186 yr comment_353285 C'mon, the guys 6'4" with a 12 foot wing span and was wide open and Nichols over threw him.
September 5, 20186 yr comment_353288 this isn't an either or situation guys... was a bad throw made worse by the receiver. I know everyone has their hate on for Nichols, but Washington showed why he didn't get on the field sooner. Raw rookie who isn't ready.

If the receiver doesn't attempt a 1 handed catch the DB picks it anyway. If he goes up with 2 hands, maybe he gets both hands on the ball, maybe he doesn't. If the QB doesn't throw high into double coverage, no chance of a pick.

September 5, 20186 yr comment_353292 Obviously it was LaPolice's fault for drawing up a play that required Nichols to throw behind Washington to work.

Ball was at pad level within an arms length of the receiver. You can't blame the QB for that.

With the shape of the ball a one handed attempt that gets tipped is worse than not attempting the catch at all. The ball is coming in hard & fast so why would Washington even think he could catch it with 1 hand? Not a smart play. Again, it comes down to receiver basics. Doing it while cutting over the middle with defenders all around is trouble.

You can't let the receiver off the hook, he compounded the problem. Plus Washington completely blew the tackle, he had a clear shot at him around the 45 and he let the D.B. run through his arms and right over his body. I guess he's not getting recruited for S.T. anytime soon.
September 5, 20186 yr comment_353313 If it was Reilly, a great deep ball QB, to Duke, a noted 50-50 receiver, in that situation, then it would have a much better chance of success. It wasn't. It was Nichols, who doesn't have the best arm and doesn't throw the deep ball accurately to Washington, a rookie receiver trying to make his 2nd CFL catch. Nichols has the experience. He should know his own limitations. He should know not to throw into double coverage, especially to an untested rookie. I'll stick with bad decision and bad throw as the major causes of the INT.

No way....in a split second he is going to try and catch it, even if it is a high throw or slightly behind...to expect him to just let it go is ridiculous!
September 5, 20186 yr comment_353346 Not the best video evidence, but you can plainly see the ball is thrown too high. If thrown at pad level, I think he has it. By the way, there is a Rider on Washington, but he shows as a blur in this snapshot. Still, the ball is thrown to the right space..just too high. If not tipped, it lands in that open space. But I do agree that a receiver’s natural instinct is to make a play on that ball. As an aside, Stanley Bryant is the man responsible for knocking Elam out of bounds, some 50 yards downfield. That’s effort!
