Two Riders Charged With Assault

Bushwakker statement on the video

Bushwakker Brewing Company

The Bushwakker has been dragged, reluctantly, into the news recently. Regina is now aware of the events that took place near the Bushwakker on the morning of August 18 and which involved a group of Saskatchewan Roughrider team members. Not only are we Roughrider fans, but the Roughriders bring us business, so we are doubly concerned and hope that this does not deprive Regina of seeing our home team in a home Grey Cup.

Some of those events were captured on two of our security cameras. We want to make it clear that:

1. Our security cameras were the only aspect of Bushwakker involvement. At the time of the incident the Bushwakker had been closed for over two hours, and, to the best of our knowledge, none of those involved had been in the Bushwakker.

2. The police investigators came to us asking about the possibility that relevant security footage might be available. We had not viewed that footage and until then were not aware of the incident.

3. We have not discussed these events with any representatives of the media until now, after charges have been laid.

4. And FYI, the time stamp on our security system is late by roughly 10 minutes. The events happened at 3:00 AM, not 2:50AM.

It looks like they are trying not to be blamed for the arrests.

The Crown waited 3 weeks and laid aggravated assault charges, so they believe the assault was committed with intent to severely injure or it was committed with a weapon.  They were able to identify 2

CBC reported the alleged victim was in a different courtroom at the same time Anderson and Smith entered their pleas. He was there as part of an ongoing case against him for possession of cocaine with intent to traffick. He was one of 8 people busted by police.

And an update:

REGINA — Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Taj Smith has been ordered to stand trial for a charge of aggravated assault.

Riders defensive back Dwight Anderson, who had been facing the same charge, was discharged Thursday afternoon by Judge Barbara Tomkins following a preliminary hearing.

Details of the evidence presented cannot be published due to a court-ordered publication ban.

Smith elected his case be heard by a Court of Queen’s Bench judge and jury.

On Aug. 18, the Regina Police Service was called to a fight outside of a nightclub on the 2000 block of Dewdney Ave. at around 2:50 a.m.

Police found a 20-year-old man at the scene suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to hospital by EMS and treated for his injuries.

Anderson and Smith were arrested and charged on Sept. 11 in relation to the assault.

A third Rider, Eron Riley, was also charged with aggravated assault in the incident. However, last week, the court ordered a stay of proceedings in Riley’s case.
