have to keep in mind a couple things....... 1) This is the new normal...it's what guys are getting..... and 2) The cap is going to go up, so it's not as big of a cap hit as it once was...

New normal for now.  Time will tell if teams who give out these huge contracts to unproven players (ie. not a Crosby / McDavid type) can win the cup.  Blackhawks have not been the same since Kane and Toews have gone onto their huge contracts.

Here is a graph of the cap over time.

The only reason it has gone up since 2014 is because the PA has forced it to because of a built in escalator clause, otherwise, based on revenues, it would have been flat or gone down.

What new revenues are going to come into the NHL to make the cap suddenly start to go up?

Former Detroit Red Wings and Calgary Flames forward Jiri Hudler is accused of having an outburst on a flight to Prague in which he threatened flight attendants, demanded cocaine and tried to urinate in a food cart, according to a report in the Czech Republic.

Hudler, 33, was said to have threatened a flight attendant when she refused to procure him cocaine. The staff also accuses the veteran of 11 National Hockey League seasons of using cocaine in the washroom.

In a statement to Blesk magazine, Hudler denies the allegations.

A member of the Red Wings' 2008 Stanley Cup-winning team, Hudler is a free agent after spending last season with the Dallas Stars.

He has tallied 164 goals and 264 assists in 708 career games with the Red Wings, Flames, Florida Panthers and Stars.

Is it tho? The new normal.. It seems its not.. It seems a few select teams tend to overpay a couple guys but then a couple guys who should get more get less... Eichel at 10 is insane.. Ehlers and pastrnak at 6 is a bargain. There are tons of teams losing money every year... The cap is stagnant and the only reason it has gone up is the players using the escalator thing... If not.. The cap would actually be way less... NHL doesn't make a ton of money compared to the other big 3.. I almost wanna say big 4 cuz i bet MLS does better in terms of cash than the nhl does in the states.

The best part of the Eichel deal is reports that he felt he left money on the table for the team to use on other players. lol

Regarding the Cap, as others have said, its a false cap based on the PA escalating it and then having it clawed back through escrow.  I think its a strategy on the part of the PA to anger the players who dont understand how it works.  They all want a lower escrow but keep going along with the escalator.  50% of revenue is 50% of revenue whether you trigger an escalator to 100 million or drop down to 70 million.

Upon completion of the next contract there will be a long, nasty work stoppage.  And the end result will be the cap (and wages) rolled back.
