Grandstanding for the QAnon cult and other assorted nutjobs.    Do the GOP truly understand how inane this makes them look?

Isn't there some way to have idiots like this removed if they try this ****? Other than voting them out? Can't a senator be removed?

God I'm tired of bullshit.

A Senator can be removed by 2/3 votes

Article 14, Section 3 of the US Constitution:

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

The two week delay is going to pose some major problems for the Republicans:

GOP was crying about the Dems "unfairly" rushing things through, and not providing Trump with enough time to mount a "adequate defense"  Some more time is not going to help in that regard - there is no adequate defense for what happened.  No lawyer of note, wants to touch this thing with a ten foot pole.

The esteemed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has filed the papers calling for the impeachment of Joe Biden.  You also have the impeachment of Donald Trump.   The comparison is going to make the Republicans look like a joke, and serve to further highlight imaginary vs actual crimes.

The Republicans biggest problem though..... is looming on the horizon:

These stories are coming out on a daily basis.  In the next two weeks, there will be many more.   The full extent of Trump's attempts to overturn the election, the stoking of his base to "do something" about the "stolen election" and GOP complicity is becoming clearer by the day.  The pool of potentially damaging witnesses and submission evidence grows larger, by the minute.  Democrats will have the ability to showcase this stuff at trial, and put people under oath.

I believe that this thing is going to morph into a trial of the Republican Party.   Trump has thrown countless people under the bus, over the years.   Now Republicans may have to think about throwing Trump under the bus, to protect the GOP party at large.  Also the realization, that no matter what they do - Trump's gonna Trump.

A real Hobson's choice here:

Impeach Trump
and deal with the enraged cult who are capable of anything and Trump in the background calling for civil war on the GOP, or a new patriot party or whatever passes as revenge.
Acquit Trump
despite the evidence and have Donald paralyzing things with threats to run again, and watch the GOP's reputation, as far as the donor class, swing voters and new demographic and young voters.....go straight into the tank, for a long time.

Took longer than I thought......but Trump is now truly the Republican tar baby.

Apparently a total of 2.7 million was paid out just before the riot from Trump's re-election committee to the various groups who fomented the violence.

great post , thanks. the whole thing I mean.

The idea that he would at that  point replace his AG, is insane.

GOP Senators are starting to waffle about convicting Trump, I would be surprised if more than 10 vote along with the Democrats.

It’s like ah that’s ancient history, let’s move forward and unite and we will dictate what that means and we will also rewrite what happened to fit our unintelligent narrative. Bizarre frustrating and maddening how weak the Democrats are and how it seems so easy just to roll over them with little resistance. What a broken system.

As has been reported, this was not a beer-hall putsch. This was a deliberate, planned and funded attempt by some of the GOP and Trump loyalists to subvert the American democracy and overthrow a legally elected government. If the Democrats and an independent Department of Justice do not act on this act of sedition, America will pay for it.

I have a feeling McConnell will find his 17.
