Yeah, I mean if you’re handing it off there you may as well kneel.

GDT-Tire fire vs Bombers
Other than that, it was a fine enough half.

I respect the fact that they gave Streveler a series but it drives me nuts that Lapo is so compelled to make every play so cute with him. He will never let him do a regular drop back. It’s all fakes in every direction. That’s effective in bursts but he’s set up to fail.

It's time to hand the ball to Streveler.
Even including his reps last season the sample size is tiny.

Matt Nichols Discredited Too Much? Passing Yards Are Meaningless
If the dumps offs to Harris in a frenzied panic are in fact even 50% Lapo’s fault then yes it’s a Lapo issue.

Matt Nichols Discredited Too Much? Passing Yards Are Meaningless
How many times do teams have to falter after a hot first half of the season before people realize what type of offence is sustainable and what type isn’t? This happens literally every year.

Matt Nichols Discredited Too Much? Passing Yards Are Meaningless
Because this isn’t the 1940s and Harris is 32 years old?

Matt Nichols Discredited Too Much? Passing Yards Are Meaningless
The “but we won!!!” argument is just so unbelievably bad, it’s hard to take it seriously.

I’m not doubting these things as facts but you’re framing them as fatal flaws while at the same time suggesting that Nichols has almost no blame for the struggles of the offence. I mean, I feel like you know what you’re doing here.

It’s amazing the flaws some people see in no doubt HOF QBs while they bend over backwards to defend our sub-mediocre QB.

That’s an embarrassing stat.

The fundamental difference between our viewpoints is you believe that the strategy is in place because of the co-ordinator and is independent of the QB and I believe that the significant limitations of the QB influence the way the game is called significantly. We will never agree and no coach will ever confirm or deny it so all we can do is argue until both of us go nuts.

I mean, even if he does throw more picks than Nichols it will almost certainly be because he actually pushes the ball downfield. Even the best QBs in the league throw picks occasionally. Sure, you don’t want it to become a regular occurrence but protecting the ball, while important, isn’t really a virtue when you aren’t moving the ball through the air anyway. This “he throws more picks” thing is the last resort argument for the Nichols still deserves to be the starter crowd. As if checking it down 12 times a game and getting two first downs in the second half is any better than throwing an occasional pick.

Sample size is tiny and one of this two picks was tipped. This isn’t nearly as big a problem as it’s made out to be.

I mean, the backup QB will always be overhyped. Even moreso when the starter is so underwhelming. But I do believe for most of us, the desire to see Streveler more is less infatuation with him and more exasperation with Nichols. And yes, people were calling for Pierce's head even in 2011.

As if he's in any way to blame for being stuffed on third down. Come on. He's far and away the best short yardage QB in the league. Every QB gets stuffed on third down from time to time. Very rarely is it the QBs fault.

And how much is that the QB zeroing in on one guy before dumping it off? Lots of factors at play.

I also think it’s pretty clear at this point that Matthews is largely just a guy. He’s a fine enough complimentary piece but expectations of him being our long awaited number one receiver were WAY too high.

Throwing to Bowman would have been a disaster because he wasn’t capable of getting open. I don’t doubt that Lapo struggles to utilize his receivers properly. Largely because he rarely has them running slants or other intermediate routes to help out his QB. But saying he didn’t utilize guys that were clearly done is unfair. And again, he’s very clearly not calling 15 dump offs to Harris per game.

Lions @ Tiger-Cats
I’m convinced Rod will never understand the rules of football.

Dressler was pretty good for us and when he wasn’t, it was because he was old and broken. Bowman was done before he set foot on the field for the Bombers last year. Matthews is an interesting one but he hardly set the world on fire in Calgary last year.
