2024/2025 Blue Bombers Off-Season Thread
Riders had 5 turnovers off Dukes in that game, including a pick six for winning TD. TD pass he threw was a screen that Emilus took 35 yards breaking 4 tackles. Started 3 drives in the redzone off turnovers and scored 1 TD. Patterson is a bottom half of the league backup QB with no upside. Interesting thing with him is when he was allowed to pass downfield he turned the ball over like crazy. 7 turnovers in the 3 games he threw more than 25 passes.

Patterson has zero passing ability from the pocket. Dukes improved with reps and is still a big upside guy. Main thing with Dukes is he needs to do a better job of managing the football and avoiding turnovers. Patterson can't do anything with his arm to put fear in a defense. IMO there's no reason to have Patterson and Streveler both on the roster. If you want Patterson, why bring back Streveler, and vice-versa. They are very similar low-upside run threat QB's with very limited passing ability. If Streveler is anywhere close to 100% he's a way bigger threat at what they both do well. Waste of a roster spot to have both. Bring in someone who can pass. Dukes almost 10 points better than Patterson in QBR and still 26.

Streveler runs an option package well, not a QB sneak or wedge. This is his value as a pro player. He's a specialist, he can play a role, and he can step in to win a game or two. He's not a guy who can live in the pocket either. Have to hope he's physically intact and has some durability left to play that role. Need a QB who can run a full CFL passing offense around too just in case there's a longer-term need.

If you did this you'd have to exempt QB's or something.

Each team probably will keep another 1-2 vets. Most are budgeted to be over the limit and get closer to it with long-term injuries already. I don't believe the salary limit going up that much will change their internal budgets.

Not seeing who really fits the boundary wideout spot of who they've signed so far. And that spot has been a weakness since Darvin Adams has been gone. Lawler and Wolitarsky were ok there, but much better fits in the slot or to the field. I bet they try Mitchell there, but I'm not sure he's got the ability at all 3 levels to get open and make plays.

Now that our US scouting department has more sober hours we can hope.

Free agency is always fun when the names of guys who are absolutely cooked but recognizable bring extra value.

He's already a free agent. He was released. The whole negotiating window run around only applies to guys who are coming up to their contract expiry.

Surprisingly hasn't hit media yet. In January. Won't affect the current players at all.

Dakota just received the biggest fine in MHSAA history for recruiting and their head coach resigned. He also coaches LB’s with the Bisons but it was a pretty big shock. He could be back but all we have is that if he comes back to the CFL this year he has to play for us. He could get cut and sit and wait for the next NFL call until 2026 if he wants.

Personally don't see how Mike Miller (the American coach who can't keep a job) or Jarious Jackson would be anything but. I mean Jarious has had mostly terrible offenses as a playcaller. Gets demoted and pushed back up to playcaller somewhere else, gets demoted again. His only real good offense was last year with MBT and maaaaybe 2021 Toronto also with MBT, but really inconsistent. That would be a question mark to me. It's all question marks. They have to retool the offense. Mitchell is a deep threat. Question for him is if he can develop much else.

Big assumptions though. Hogan was coaching U Sports before Jackson even retired from playing. Let the initial panic wear off because it's a name you don't recognize.

And? If they jumped off a bridge, would you?

You gotta be really sour to have your mind made up on this being a bad hire. Keep in mind Buck Pierce hadn't called a play for a PeeWee team before he was given the OC job here. You've got three experienced CFL coaches leading the offense. Judgement on Hogan's scheme/play calling can come later.

That's the size of most of the DB's in the league. Guys who cover and block on punts/kickoffs. I expect if he made the roster he'd be the 2nd returner on kickoff.

Cobb is fine if he can play a role on special teams, covering and blocking too. If they have an illusion he'll be a player on O I'd be a little weary. Like you need to sign/draft another Canadian receiver who can play this year. You basically flip Augustine into him and Logan is your backup RB/returner instead of a receiver/returner. I like Nield that the Argos just cut. Kind of a Wolitarsky style guy, maybe -4 savvy but +2 athleticism.

Not at all explosive. To me, I'm bringing in and discarding American rush ends and WIL backers until I find someone special. These are really the two simplest spots on the field. Do the same job everytime, beat your opponent and flow to the ball. If you're not at all explosive, sayonara. Really no need to settle on a handful of guys who are not at all special. If you're waiting on guys to be good you'll be developing them just in time to see them sign with your rivals.

I like McKellar. I think he still has a lot of upside. Otherwise that's just a pile of guys. Some way over the hill, and we probably already have more than enough of that on OL, some who have never been good CFL players. Personally I would have planned on going 3 Americans on the OL both for ease of competition for spots, running the OL a bit cheaper and allowing depth. I'd feel a lot better about 3 Americans then 4-5 Canadians filling out the other 3 spots. We'll have to see what's to come but we've kind of ****** ourselves for Canadian receiver/RB depth.

Is there a betting site where I can lay down a bet on Tyrell Ford being cut by Feb 1 next year? Bombers effectively hid him at field corner. Made some nice plays on the ball, one of the best athletes out there for sure. Still a lot of struggles with stopping and locking to read what's happening. He's a major vulnerability if he's playing any position other than field corner IMO.

Trump's trade policies will end up being good for CFL players if they are sustained. Tariffs and any potential reduced trade deficits will drop the US dollar. Issue for Canada will be the price of oil and where that lands to determine what our dollar is worth. They'll be fighting the US on income tax increases. Might see even more guys staying in Canada.

Haba should be gonzo. Garbutt is at least a stable contain guy, maybe work him into being a guy who can play 3 technique a bit too on passing downs. Vaughters can pass rush off edge and inside too.

I could see him here. They seem to be collecting that type of receiver. Hollins is a real technician but he's small and not the kind of guy to get too dirty. They brought in about 20 guys they hoped would be a Hollins here last year. Wilson was good and the rest looked surprised somebody would think about paying them to play football.

You're panicking a bit here haha. There's not many guys they've wanted at a reasonable number who haven't re-signed since about 2017. Only real big loss was Desjarlais. Janarion was a bit of a tougher one coming off a pretty terrible season and a couple years in a row with significant injury. I can understand why they moved on. I can't understand what the **** they did in the 2024 off-season/training camp/season to try to replace him. Generally haven't had a big problem with choices they've made to not pay guys. Personnel side aside from DB's has been brutal going on 3 years. And unfortunately I think we lost the most competent guy we had over there in Goveia. But nice that they've added onto McManus because I think he's basically useless. Why the **** did they re-sign Kyrie Wilson?

Vaughters is almost the exact guy we need off the edge. Would be nice if he was 4-5 years younger.
